Antigua and Barbuda is an island nation located in the eastern Caribbean Sea on the boundary with the Atlantic Ocean and this island is a part of the Lesser Antilles archipelago. Antigua is the largest island of the group. Antigua is also the most populated of the islands, the population is estimated to be around 67,450 (2002). Pre-ceramic Amerindians were the first to inhabit the islands of Antigua and Barbuda in 2400 BC, and the island has a long history and a very prominent place as one of the older islands of the Caribbean Seas. The master mariner Christopher Columbus landed on his second voyage in 1493 and gave the island the name Antigua and the name has stayed. The islands have a warm, tropical climate, with fairly constant temperatures year round, and that is why visitors come from all over the world. Tourism, obviously, is the main industry of the islands and it accounts for 90% of GNP and is a popular stop off for US cruise ships. The sites of Antigua are a treat to see with long winding coastlines where trekkers and sun worshippers can enjoy snow white beaches - 365 in total which form the main attraction of Antigua. The coral reefs and coast also attract scuba divers, snorklers, wind surfers and kite surfers. Antigua is the island paradise that dreams are made of.
