| Fabulously wealthy in ancient times, Thassos could have had more to offer the visitor. But much archaeological heritage has been lost, except for some minor ruins in the capital Limenas. Marble quarries mar the south and scars still remain of forest fires that almost engulfed the island more than a decade ago. However, a good road circles the island giving easy access to fine beaches and splendid mountain forests. Thassos is now on the brink of major exploitation by package tour operators and signs of resistance are patchy. Many in Thassos are busy tarting the place up with licks of paint, lorry loads of fake sand and imports of chip fat fryers. |
