| The most southerly of the Ionian chain Zakynthos, or as the Italians call it Zante, lost many of its Venetian buildings in a 1953 earthquake. Recent years have seen a major influx of package tour operators and parts of this once Arcadian island have prostituted themselves to tourism with the 'golden mile' at Laganas likened to a set from a science fiction movie.
