Madeira Islands, Portugal

Madeira is an archipelago situated around one and a half hours plane ride away from Lisbon. The archipelago consists of two islands namely; Madeira and Porto Santo which are inhabited. The other five islands are totally uninhabited islands and only a few authorised visitors are allowed on the islands.

The islands are situated in the Atlantic Ocean and are not too far from the rest of Europe, however, far enough to feel the disconnection from the real world and the enchantment of a paradise on earth.

A perfect destination for a trip that enlights the mind, body and soul. These islands are contrastingly captivating with splendid crystal clear beaches on one hand and mountains on the other. An island that has a lot to offer considering its size. A place full of sunshine and warm mild climate together with beautiful blue sea. A popular year-round resort, famed worldwide for wine, embroidery artisans, New Years' Eve celebrations - with a spectacular fireworks show, striking scenery and beautiful flowers. Madeira is full of historical monuments, enchanting landscapes, picturesque beaches and villages, this island is sure to keep you entertained.

Amongst the many places to see you should include the following on your list.

The Caves of Sao Vicente where you will find the astounding Volcanism centre. This will be a very interesting day out, there are audiovisual demonstrations of volcanic eruptions. Here you will also witness the volcanic caves which are over 400,000 years old.

A perfect opportunity to experience the culture here is to visit the local markets where you will find a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, clothes, cd’s and much more. The markets originally used to sell fruit and vegetables but eventually evolved to selling a bit of everything.
