| Funchal, Madeira Portugal
Funchal is the capital city of Madeira and is the largest city on the island. Its name originates from the abundance of fennel which grows in Madeira. It is a rather lively and bustling city with something always going on at every corner. This city is situated on a hillside and its always a tough way up to town. Funchal is becoming increasingly frequented by tourists who come to experience island life Portuguese style. The port is mostly busy exporting wine and fish. The city is very attractive and colorful. When you first look at Funchal from the sea you will particularly notice the white washed houses and the bright and colorful plants all along the shore. Some of the most famous buildings here is the Opera House, the Cathedral, the Presbyterian churches and last but not least the Casino.
