Siena, Italy Travel & Tourism Search
Siena is constituted of 17 medieval contrade (districts), each with their own churches, museums and coat of arms. The locals of the separate districts are tightly knit together and very loyal to their contradas. It is infact not recommended for people to marry others from other contradas. This loyality is shown annually in the famous ‘Palio di Siena’. The Palio consists of two horse races held on the 2nd July and 16th August in Piazza del Campo. Horses representing each contrada race against each other for the Palio, all in the name of the Virgin Mary.
