Sliema is the central entertainment area of Malta. It is a centre for shops, restaurants and trendy cafes. Sliema is also a major commercial and residential area and houses several of Malta's most recent hotels. Sliema, which means `peace', was once a quiet fishing town on the peninsula across the Grand Harbour from Valletta. The elegant villas and town houses line the quiet, inland streets. The promenade, which runs for several kilometres from Gzira just south of Sliema to St Julians is ideal for walker and joggers.
There are plenty of seats along the promenade and on summer evenings the seafront becomes a sociable meeting place for locals. The coastline has two tower fortifications: The De Redin watch tower built in the 17th century and the other was built by the British in neo-gothic style in the 1880s.
The young at heart will enjoy nearby Paceville - this locality offers much to tourists looking for nightlife entertainment, including discos, bars, Dragonara Casino, restaurants and other entertainment. This village still retains some of it's old dwellings and boat houses. The small bay still shelters numerous coloured Maltese boats that are berthed here all year long.
