Aswell as being one of the most famous destinations in the South of Spain, most people do not know that Cordoba was a very important capital in the 11th Century. It was also the centre of the Moorish Spain and became one of the greatest ports of all times. This city was founded by the Romans and the port was used to ship olive oil, wine and wheat back to Rome. The ‘El Puento Romano’ which is the famous bridge that crosses the river, was built by the Romans. There are numerous monuments to visit around this city which prove the great historical past of this town. Monuments such as the Mezquita, the Moorish Mosques, the Roman ruins and many more are a perfect example. The Mezquita is a renowned Arabian mosque and apparently the third largest in the world. One has to truly see to believe the beauty of this piece of architecture. This mosque is a true treasure to this city. Apart from it’s history and true Spanish culture, Cordoba is a bustling night life destination.

As impressive and surprising Cordoba presents itself to today's visitor, as impressive and surprising was its past. Not many know that in 11th century it was one of the most important capitals in Europe. People of the most different cultures and religions - Jews, Muslims and Christians - were living peacefully together, and important philosophers, scientists and artists emerged from here. Knowing about Cordoba's cultural background you will certainly find interesting additional aspects when visiting its great monuments - first of all of course the world-famous Mezquita, the Moorish mosque - and museums. On the other hand Cordoba is as well a very lively town in the best Andalusian tradition, a town of Flamenco and bullfighting, and certainly one of the most attractive destinations in southern Spain.

CÓRDOBA lies upstream from Sevilla beside a loop of the Guadalquivir, which was once navigable as far as here. It is today a minor provincial capital, prosperous in a modest sort of way. Once, however, it was the largest city of Roman Spain, and for three centuries it formed the heart of the western Islamic empire, the great medieval caliphate of the Moors.
