Ibiza, Balearic Islands Travel & Tourism Search

Most of the people who visit Ibiza for the first time are lured by the sun, beach and Ibiza clubbing unparalleled in the world. These attractions have made Ibiza famous all over Europe and the rest of the world. However there is the ‘other Ibiza’, less well known but with charms all of it’s own and the potential to enrich the lives of many an unsuspecting tourist looking for both family holidays in Ibiza and those tempted by clubbing Ibiza holidays.

In particular there is the island’s cultural, historical, artistic and environmental heritage. Many of these elements date to before the modern tourist phenomenon but haven’t been appreciated until relatively recently. Indeed in 1999 the island gained global significance when UNESCO recognised Ibiza as a Human Heritage site.

Take the grounds inside the walls of Dalt Villa, built in the 16th Century. The Fencian Punic necropolis in Pulg des Molins, one of the most important in the Mediterranean; the Fencian village in Sa Caleta built in 8th Century BC, and the Ocean Posidonia Meadows located between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera.

The historic and environmental value of these features is inestimable but they are only the tip of the iceberg, especially for the tourist thirsty for the ‘real Ibiza’ there are natural areas of amazing beauty, such as the salt plains in Ibiza and Formentera, the area of the Amunts in the north of the island. The popular and traditional architecture – an authentic wonder of simplicity functionality and perfected integration in the landscape, traditional dance and music, the popular festivities and the gastronomy are clear to be seen.

There is a project to turn Dalt Vila, the grounds inside the walls of Ibiza, into a life museum with a collage of explanatory panels in different languages all around the route. We are also encouraging the architectural restoration of the most emblematic buildings of the island. Every May we celebrate a medieval market that according to many has already become the best in Spain.

Ibiza is well known for its lively nightlife and is a prime hot spot for many famous parties and festivals which attracts many young visitors annually from all around the globe. However Ibiza has a lot to offer even for the older visitors. If one leaves the beaches and travels inland you can witness a very typical Mediterranean culture, very different from the culture you fine on the coast. There are many cultural things to see such as the famous wall-paintings of Ses Fontelles.

One of the Balearic islands and certainly the most charming, unspoilt paradise of them all. It may be small but it has a big reputation. Ibiza is steeped in history, having been invated by many different civilisations, each leaving their mark. The 'real Ibiza' is the land of farmers and fishermen and some of the most beautiful areas, off the beaten track.
