Firmly set in the heart of Europe, Germany has the highest population and possibly the healthiest economy of all the European countries. It shares its land borders with Austria, France, Poland and the Netherlands, to name but a few and it borders both the Baltic and the North Seas. Contoured by valleys and imposing rivers, the centre of the country is dominated bydensely-wooded uplands and large areas of Germany's diverse terrain are protected nature reserves. The capital of Germany, Berlin, was once divided both physically and symbolically by a massive wall. Unification was achieved in 1990 and it is now acknowledged as the emblem of the reunited country, yet has managed to retain both its history and its importance.

Air: The national airline is Lufthansa. Many other airlines serve the country, including an increasing number of low-cost airlines such as Easyjet and Ryanair operating from the UK. Road: Germany is connected to allsurrounding countries by a first-class network of motorways and trunk roads. The Channel Tunnel: Eurotunnel operates trains 24 hours per day through the Channel Tunnel between Folkestone in Kent and Calais in France. Eurotunnel operates three to four passenger trains per hour at peak times. The journey takes approximately 35 minutes. Rail: The quickest route by train from the UK is through the Channel Tunnel with connections from Brussels or Paris to Austria.

Berlin is increasingly becoming popular for hosting sportive events such as the German Gymnastics festival, the World Beach Volley ball championship and Berlin will also be hosting FIFA 2006. Hannover is the capital city of Lower Saxony and is a relatively smaller city. This city is not a very famous tourist destination however it offers some of Europe’s largest trade ground facilities which have hosted some of the world’s most famous trade fairs such as the Expo 2000 and Cebit.
