Carcassone is situated on either side of the Aude River. It is made up of two parts; the Cite and the Valle Basse. The Ville Basse is the main business district whilst the Cite which is located on top of a hill on the right bank of the river is built within 5th Century medieval walls. These fortifications are amongst the most spectacular medieval remains in Europe.
