Erfurt, Germany

Erfurt is the capital of Thuringia and as Martin Luther once said, ‘is situated in the best location. It is the perfect place for a city’. The skyline of Erfurt is dominated by churches and convents which is very picturesque. Some of the places to visit include; Domberg (Cathedral Hill) with it’s striking twin churches of St. Mary and St. Severus, also very impressive is the Kramerbrucke (Merchant’s Bridge) which is the longest bridge in Europe and is completely built up with houses on either side which are still inhabited.

Another good reason to visit this Thuringian metropolis is to experience the ‘Kramerbrückenfest’, Thuringia’s largest and most popular festival. Visitors come from all over to see the many stalls around the “Krämerbrücke” bridge, to witness medieval crafts in action, to listen to the minstrels and to watch jugglers and street entertainers

'Erfordia turrita' or 'Erfurt, city of towers' – this is how Martin Luther once praised Erfurt with its 25 parish churches, 15 religious foundations and 10 chapels. This impressive list of ecclesiastical buildings in conjunction with the magnificent architectural motif of the cathedral and the Church of St. Severus (now the city’s emblem) inspired historians such as Ernst Stida (1585–1632) to refer to the city as the 'The Thuringian Rome'.

The skyline of Erfurt is shaped by dozens of churches, monasteries, and convents thrusting their pointed steeples upward to the sky. In the Middle Ages, Erfurt was known as 'Thuringian Rome' because of its religious orders.
