| The Romans founded Trier in 16 B.C. By the end of the 3rd Century the city was an Imperial Residence and capital of the West-Roman Empire. Six emperors held court here, and as early as the 4th century Trier had a population of 80,000.

| The monumental northern gateway of the roman city fortifications is the largest Roman fortified gateway still in existence, being some 36 m long, 23 m wide and 30 m high. The massive structure, erected at the end of the second century A. D., was constructed using sandstone blocks without any mortar. |
