| A household name since the movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Kefalonia is now opening itself up to tourism in a big way. More than annual 500,000 visitors - up 85 per cent in the past few years. And islanders are cashing in by hiking up prices at every turn. Venetian buildings that weren't flattened by wartime bombs were demolished in an earthquake in 1953 and nearly all rebuilt in cement bunker style. The result is a perplexing mix of old and new. A few picturesque resorts are matched by some desperately dull villages. Mountain scenery, fine beaches and spectacular caves help to balance the books |
