| Karlovac is situated where the Dinaric Alps sweep down to meet the Pannonian plain. Here, on the left bank of the Kupa, the great Pannonian plain ends and the hilly and mountain region that goes all the way to the Mediterranean begins. Karlovac belongs in geographical terms to Central Croatia. It is a cross-roads for rail and road traffic, 56 km from Zagreb, 130 km from Rijeka, 30 km from Metlika in Slovenia, and 40 km from Velika Kladuša in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Karlovac is a county town and the centre of the region that embraces the Kupa area, the western part of Žumberak, Kordun, parts of Lika and Gorski Kotar. Its population according to the census of 1991 is 60,000. |

| Karlovac got its name after the Styrian archduke Karlo who initiated the construction of the town in 1579, at a time when a threat of a Turkish invasion into the remaining parts of Croatia and into Slovenia was at its greatest. It was not, therefore, accidental that the spot at the confluence of the Korana and Kupa, and not far from Korana - Mreznica confluence, was chosen as its building site. Neither is the ground - plan of the fortress : the shape of a six pronged star, surrounded by moats, is still visible today.
