| The Hague, Netherlands
South Holland is located in the west of the country and situated on the shores of the North Sea. It is heavily industrialized and quite heavily populated. Some of the famous cities of this province include The Hague and Rotterdam which is famously linked to it’s harbour. The Hague is considered to be the Royal City and is the capital city of the South Holland province and the administrative capital of the Netherlands. Queen Beatrix lives and works in this city and here you will also find many head offices and foreign embassies. This city is home to two beach towns, the most famous being the Scheveningen. It is an amazing city to visit and here you will note the many prestigious houses, beautiful parks, avenues and parliament buildings.
Some attractions to visit while in the Hague include the famous Madurodam which is a demonstration of miniature Holland and it’s most popular landmarks such as houses in Amsterdam, Windmills and canals, the Peace Palace in the Hague and also the world’s largest train railway which is fully operative.
The Mauritshuis Royal Picture Gallery is a famous tourist destination. Here you can witness paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer and houses over 300 works of art. The museum is a work of art in itself as the architecture is truly remarkable.
The Peace Palace is also symbolic of The Hague, this was called the Peace Palace in order to emphasize the importance of achieving world peace and thus is considered to be the ‘temple of peace’. The palace houses the Hague academy of International Law, the International Court of Justice and the Permanent Court of Arbitration.
The palace was designed by a French architect Cordonnier after an international competition was held to find the best design, however the design was adjusted by the Dutch architect Van de Steur.
