It may be a cliché, but London remains a collection of villages, and one of the most delightful is Dulwich. Its prime attraction is the Picture Gallery, the first purpose-built public art gallery in the world. Highlights of the collection include some wonderful portraits by Gainsborough and Rubens, and one by Rembrandt, famous for being the world’s most stolen painting!

Dulwich is a well-to-do enclave, quite different from the surrounding areas. In fact Dulwich is pretty much isolated, with a buffer of heath-land, woods and golf courses between them and the environs.
