A decade ago, a few dedicated arts buffs crossed the river to the South Bank complex, to see a play or exhibition. Now this area, stretching along the banks of the Thames eastwards from Waterloo, is one of the coolest parts of London.

The south side of the Thames has historically been the bawdy twin to central London. For years, it was a red light district. In the 16th and 17th centuries, people came to watch bear baiting, cock fights and bull rings. They also came to take in a little Shakespeare at the Globe
