| Now part of the borough of Tameside, this old market town lies on the north bank of the River Tame. The Assheton family, who owned the manor of Ashton from the 14th century, are portrayed in the stained glass widows of St Michael’s Church. Ashton-Under-Lyne is the largest town in the borough, with excellent access to central Manchester and to the foothills of the Pennines. |

| There was a settlement of some kind at Ashton long before the Norman Conquest of 1066. A small hillock on the north bank of the River Tame, overlooking a good crossing-point on the river, became a fortified position guarding the boundary between the ancient kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia.
