Knutsford is said to derive its name from the Danish King Canute who supposedly 'forded' the River Lily in 1016. The name Cunetesford appears in the Domesday Book (1086) and many names of Danish origin are found in Knutsford.

To the north west is Knutsford, so called because according to legend King Canute forded the River Lily here. One of the town’s most famous residents was Elizabeth Gaskell, who was sent to live with her aunt after the death of her mother, when she was a very small child. The town and surrounding countryside feature in many of the author’s works and you can find out more about Mrs Gaskell at the Knutsford Heritage Centre.
