| Despite its name, Littleborough is one of the larger settlements in the borough, yet retains its village atmosphere. It gained importance, because it stood at the junction of two ancient routes over the Pennines. Its transport links were further enhanced with the coming of the Rochdale canal and the Trans-Pennine railway, which goes through the Summit Tunnel towards Todmorden. When the tunnel was completed in 1841 it was the longest in the world. Its designer, George Stephenson, is also responsible for the town's railway station.
