| Northwich, like Nantwich, sits on the rock salt beds of Cheshire and has been a producing salt since Roman times. ‘Wich’ was the Anglo Saxon word for a salt manufacturing town and Northwich is indeed to the north of Nantwich, which explains how it came by its name. This aspect of the town’s heritage is the focus of the Salt Museum and the Lion Salt Works, where they hold salt making demonstrations.
