| Preston is often regarded as the unofficial capital of Lancashire and lies towards the SW end of the Ribble Valley. It is an ancient settlement that was recorded in the Domesday Book and was chartered by Henry II in 1179. For some reason the town seems to have had more than its fair share of conflict with the Scots; in 1322 Robert the Bruce set fire to Preston, in 1648 Oliver Cromwell defeated an army of 20,000 Scottish supporters of Charles I and in 1745 Bonnie Prince Charlie captured the town on his way south.
