| Malta obtained independence from the UK in 1964. In 1974 it became a Republic.
Malta, Gozo and Comino, the inhabited islands of the Maltese archipelago, lie at almost the exact geographical heart of the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily is some 60 miles to the North, Tripoli 220 miles to the South and Tunis 200 miles to the West. Malta is at the crossroads between continents.
A neighbour who used to live there says: 'Its a tiny place, only 28 miles across. The water's lovely and clear, not many beaches. The language is difficult to speak.'
Malta is not in the EC, so, when travelling, you do go through customs. Also for the same reason, Malta is not subject to the same health and safety as the rest of Europe.
