| Monsaraz, Alentejo Portugal
This small hilltop town of Monsaraz was used to help guard against the Spanish a section of the River Guadiana. It’s one of the oldest Portuguese towns southern of the Tagus river. It has been occupied since pre-historic times, existing on its vicinities about one and a half hundred megalithic monuments. With its narrow cobbled lanes, low-rise old houses and an imposing castle, visitors are offered a feel of medieval Portugal in one of the oldest places in the country.
