Another once upon a time small fishing village that has grown since the 1960s into a major tourist location. Tall blocks of holiday apartments now dwarf the older area of the town. As it lies next door to the well-known and popular Vilamoura holiday resort it acts as a dormitory location for the many employees and companies involved in the tourist trade.

Conveniently located to the east of Vilamoura, Quarteira has developed into one of the Algarve's top resorts since the boom of the 1970/1980s. With safe bathing conditions and a long, sandy beach running virtually uninterrupted all the way to Faro, it is mostly popular with holidaymakers during the summer months, as well as golfers during the low season.
