The region of East Canton is German speaking and it borders with Germany, Netherlands and Luxembourg. There have been several negotiations between Belgium and Germany as to the real ownership of this region. It was in fact part of Germany on many occasions, it was claimed back by Germany after World War II in 1940 and taken back by Belgium in 1945. The locals welcomed Germany and most of the people here consider themselves German and are in fact mostly German Speaking.

The capital of this region is called Eupen and it is part of the Liege.
