Haryana is one of the oldest known areas of settlement in India and virtually is known as the 'Green' state, as it is principally an agricultural state. Though, very recently, many industrial areas are developed by the Indian government. Now, Haryana stands as one of the most developed states in India. A pronounced continental character is being experienced by the state of Haryana. The temperature during summers may even go up to 46 C, i.e., it is very hot during the summers; also the region is quite cold during winter season, and the rainfall in the region is low and is unevenly distributed during the year. Major tourist destinations in the state include Badhkal Lake, Dabchik, Jungle Babler, Karna Lake, Sohna, Surajkund, where internationally famous Surajkund Crafts Mela is held every year in February; Dumdama, a lake surrounded by the enchanting Aravali Ranges and is popullar for rock climbing, paragliding and ballooning; and Sultanpur, a waterbird reserve and the grounds are lush with lawns, trees and shrubs and masses of bougainvillaea. Kurukshetra, the battlefield of great epic Mahabharata, lies in this state.
